Congratulations! You're having a baby. This is such an important time in your life and I am excited and honored that you've chosen me to capture these special moments for you and your family. Within this guide, I will give you tips and tricks to help your session go as smoothly as possible.

Probably the most asked question is, "When do I need to book my maternity session?"

  • The best time is between 28 and 36 weeks, but ultimately, it is completely up to you. Why is this timeframe considered the best? Usually, mom has a nice, round bump by this point and usually isn't too tired or uncomfortable to complete the session. Also, the earlier you book, the more time you have to reschedule due to sickness, weather, etc.

  • I am a natural light outdoor photographer so I love doing photoshoots approximately an hour or so before sunset for the best light. Approximately an hour after sunrise is also ideal if you are an early riser. I am not but can be if needed. However, with the right location, I can make almost any time of the day work.

"What is a maternity session like?"

  • I completely understand how awkward it can be to have your photos taken. But the great thing about maternity sessions is that you will always have something to do with your hands.

  • I will do my absolute best to help guide you through basic poses, where to place your hands, where to look, etc. But if you are ever uncomfortable in a pose or with a prompt, please let me know. If you are uncomfortable, it will show in your photos and we want these to be as beautiful as possible to remember this special time.

  • Feel free to bring any props you’d like to include. Some clients will bring an ultrasound photo, blanket, letterboard, chalkboard, special baby outfit, baby shoes, etc. But don’t let this stress you out. Other clients don’t bring anything and the photos are still perfect! This is completely up to you!

"How long does the session last?"

  • This answer is completely up to you and the package you book. I have packages that are 15-minutes all the way up to 2-hours. No matter the package, though, I give each session my all and strive to bring each client the best service and photos I possibly can.

  • Ultimately, the length of the session also relies on the location and how much walking we have to do to reach our destination or how many different spots or locations we'd like to use. The longer packages are better for this so we have more time.

"How long does it take to get the photos back?"

  • My current turnaround time is approximately 1-2 weeks. I am a mother first, and my editing time depends on my daughter and how she's feeling, behaving, etc. But I do try to get them back as quickly as I possibly can.

"What should I/we wear? Do you provide gowns?"

  • Unfortunately, at this time, I do not have a client closet to provide and you will need to provide your own clothing.

  • Your clothing choices should reflect your personality but most importantly, they should be comfortable.

  • What you wear, is completely up to you. Some clients prefer jeans and a T-shirt or a nice blouse while others are more comfortable in a flowy dress. Or you can do both if you select a package that allows time for clothing changes.

  • If your husband and/or children are joining, then it is best to coordinate rather than match so you stand apart and do not blend in.

  • Suggestion: Stay away from neon or bright colors, ball caps, clothing with logos, or anything with wording. They look dated and tend to take away from everyone's gorgeous features.

  • If you are in the market for a dress, Amazon is a great option, especially if you are looking for something inexpensive.

"Can we include our furry family members?"

  • Absolutely as long as you think they will cooperate.

"Can you suggest someone to professionally do my hair and/or makeup?"

Additional Tips:

  • Moisturize your belly approximately 1-2 hours before the session to avoid any dry-looking skin. Especially if you're looking to get a few bare-belly shots. Don't forget those knees and elbows, too!

  • Try to avoid wearing tight panties and bras. A looser fit will ensure that no lines will form through tighter-fitting clothing.

  • Pay attention to your nails! A lot of images will be focused around your hands and having them on your tummy and cradling your bump. I will be taking lots of images of you holding your partner's hands, your children's hands, and all those little details. Hands are a huge part of any maternity session.
